Snow, ice and the outdoor unit

A heat pump needs air through it all winter. Keep the top clear, shovel a path around it, and watch for ice building off a roofline above — a drip that freezes on the coil night after night causes more service calls here than any component failure. If the unit is buried, switch to backup heat and call rather than chipping at it.
